In this week's Crain's Detroit Business, UltraLevel, Inc. was recognized in their Second Stage section as a local company that was able to adapt its business model to not only succeed in tough economic times, but also to grow.

Sometimes all a business needs to get back on course is a wake-up call.
That's exactly what UltraLevel Inc. got.
In 2005, the Detroit-based IT company had nearly 40 percent of its business tied up with a client that experienced a significant downturn. The client reduced its business with UltraLevel by 80 percent.
"It's an easy trap to fall into," Michael Butz, president and founder of UltraLevel, said of placing a company's success into the hands of a few clients. "You're putting all your resources into this one company because you're making all this profit from them."
To make up for the loss, Butz quickly sought to fill the void.

UltraLevel among the 13th Annual ICIC and Fortune Magazine’s Inner City 100 winners
Annual ranking showcases the 100 fastest-growing inner city businesses in America.

BOSTON, MA – UltraLevel, Inc. (http://www.UltraLevel.com), a national virtualization solutions provider in Detroit, MI, ranked 28th on this year’s Inner City 100 list of the fastest-growing inner city companies in the U.S., released by The Initiative for a Competitive Inner City and Fortune Magazine.

The Inner City 100 program recognizes successful inner city companies and their CEOs as role models for entrepreneurship, innovative business practices and job creation in America’s urban communities. The full list can be viewed at www.fortune.com/innercity100.

The rankings for each company were announced at the Inner City 100 Awards Dinner on Thursday, May 12, 2011 in Boston, MA. Winners attended a two-day event featuring seminars for Inner City 100 owners and managers at Harvard Business School, a procurement symposium, and an awards gala that drew more than 500 guests.

The Inner City 100 list provides unmatched original data on the fastest growing inner-city businesses in the U.S. In the last 13 years, 661 different companies have earned positions on the Inner City 100, collectively generating more than $2.2 billion in annual revenues and creating nearly 70,000 new jobs. Chevron Corporation, Staples Foundation and Goldman Sachs are long-time sponsors of the program.

“We are delighted to celebrate businesses like UltraLevel, Inc. that are playing a critical role in revitalizing America’s urban communities. Through their achievements, the Inner City 100 winning companies exemplify America’s remarkable potential and the future of our urban centers,” said Mary Kay Leonard, ICIC president and CEO. “These extraordinary companies demonstrate the market possibilities that exist within our inner cities and the growth that is at the heart of all urban entrepreneurial successes.”

For the 2011 list, a record number of two thousand nominations were received. Winners represent a wide span of geography, operating in 51 cities and 32 states. The 2011 Inner City 100 winners grew at a compound annual growth rate of 39 percent and an average standard growth rate of 379 percent between 2004 and 2009. Collectively, the top 100 inner city businesses employ 6,720 employees and have created more than 3,227 new jobs between 2005 and 2009.

“We are honored to be recognized among a list of such distinguished companies making a difference in their community. UltraLevel is proud to be a part of Detroit’s renaissance and is committed to playing an active role in the revitalization of the inner-city,” said Michael L. Butz Sr., UltraLevel, Inc. President and CEO. “We will continue to target urban communities for new offices and growth opportunity as a key component of our growth strategy.”

Individually, the average Inner City 100 Company’s revenues were $11.4 million and have, on average, 12 years of experience since founding. This year’s winners have a median employee turnover rate of less than 12 percent (compared to 36 percent for the national average) and 96 percent of them provide health insurance to their workers.

About UltraLevel:
UltraLevel, Inc. is a national cloud computing and virtualization solutions provider headquartered in Detroit, MI with offices throughout the mid-west, Florida, and Texas.
Notes:
To qualify for the Inner City 100 list, companies were required to have at least 51 percent of their operations located in an economically distressed urban area; have at least 10 full-time employees; and a five-year operating sales history that includes at least $200,000 in revenues in the first year of consideration, an increase in year five sales over year four sales, and fifth-year sales of at least $1 million. For the 2011 list, ICIC looked at total revenue growth from 2005 to 2009 and the specific rankings were based on these growth rates. An economically distressed urban area is defined by ICIC as having a 50 percent higher unemployment level, 50 percent higher poverty level, and 50 percent lower median income than the metropolitan statistical area.

Why is Jason going bald?

UltraLevel’s Controller, Jason Davidson, is going bald- but not in the usual stress related, male pattern baldness, hair line retreating sort of way.

He is going to have his head and beard shaved off this weekend to support Childhood Cancer Research. His mission is to raise $2,500 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s childhood cancer research efforts.

“This is a such a worthy cause to help raise much needed research dollars to battle childhood cancer, and so I am glad to put my hair on the line for this event – while I still have hair left”, says Jason.

For the last 6 weeks, Jason (along a few others that have joined forces as team “Clintondale Dragons”) have been growing out their hair and beards.

Then why is he growing out his hair?

Because this Saturday, March 12th, all of that hair will be coming off thanks to the Romeo St. Baldrick’s event! Not only are they shaving their heads to raise cancer research dollars, but also to stand in solidarity with children that are battling, or have battled cancer.

It’s all for a good cause

The Romeo, MI event has a goal to raise $120,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and currently has 217 individuals signed up to go bald on March 12th. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.

“With my bald head, I’ll stand in solidarity with kids being treated for cancer. But that’s not the main reason. Most importantly, I am doing this to raise money for life-saving research,” said Jason.

“No one, especially kids, should not know the pain of cancer, so if you can please help me and our team reach our goal I would greatly appreciate it. Donations big and small all add up and can make a huge difference in the lives of many.”

Donations May Be Made On-Line at:
http://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/jdavidson

Jason shares some experiences

The day is filled with fun events for the whole family – parade, music, food, childrens’ activities, and more, but it is also a very emotional day. It is very touching, and hard to hold back your tears, when you hear the stories from the families that have endured the cancer battle with their children, and to see all of the love and support of those that support this event.

One of the greatest moments of the 2010 event was when Emily, a child that he honored in his fundraising efforts, went up to me during the event right before I shaved my head, and thanked me. Admittedly, it was hard for me to say anything at that point through the lump in my throat, but I was able to squeeze out a simple “your welcome” and “thank you” to her for being so brave during her cancer battle.

A bit more about Jason

Jason has been participating in the St. Baldrick’s fundraiser since 2009 after first being inspired by a family friend, Noah. He was six years old at the time and battling an aggressive type of cancer called neuroblastoma. At such a young age, Noah had to go through four operations, bone marrow transplants, chemotherapy, blood transfusions, stem cell collections and all sorts of medical procedures. Noah’s cancer was in remission, but has unfortunately returned. He will now have to undergo experimental treatments to fight it – this is why we need more research dollars for childhood cancer.

About St. Baldricks

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation currently funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation coordinates its signature worldwide head-shaving events where volunteers get bald to stand in solidarity with kids fighting cancer and raise money to support life-saving childhood cancer research. St. Baldrick’s events are the fastest growing volunteer-driven fundraising opportunity benefitting pediatric cancer research. St. Baldrick’s is proof that one person, one dollar can make a difference in the fight against childhood cancer.

How many kids are affected by childhood cancer?

A child is diagnosed every 3½ minutes, and every 4 hours a child with cancer loses their battle.

Worldwide, more than 160,000 children are diagnosed with childhood cancer each year.

One in five children diagnosed with cancer will not survive.

Two thirds of childhood cancer patients will have a long lasting chronic condition from the very treatment that helped save their lives.

Currently, childhood cancer research funding accounts for less than 3% of all cancer research funding allotted by the federal government.

About the Event

This year’s event will be held on March 12th in Romeo at the Lions Club, although there will be activities throughout downtown Romeo.
