Relieving server capacity and performance limits with EqualLogic

November 25th, 2009

Limited capacity
Your server has only so many slots/bays for hard drives. Sometimes when you are looking at a server the first spec you review is simply how many hard drives can this server hold? Many of your servers are now 3 to 5 years old and there is nothing more you can do to add capacity because there are no more slots/bays left for hard drives. Hopefully you haven’t reached the point of coming in early in the morning before everyone else just to delete files so you can make it through another day.

Investing in and connecting your servers to an EqualLogic array will provide extremely scalable capacity for your servers. Looking forward, your next server purchase will not have to be based on how many slots/bays are available so long term you can spend less on your servers.

Limited performance
The limited slots/bays for hard drives on your server not only limits capacity, performance can also be extremely limited. You have a server with 6 drive slots/bays and you purchase 6 hard drives. Two of the hard drives will be mirrored, configured as RAID1, for the Operating System. Four of the hard drives will be configured as RAID5 for application and data. If you are running Exchange or SQL on this server you may find that you have plenty of capacity available, however the application performance is lagging and getting worse every week.

Investing in and connecting your servers to an EqualLogic array can provide additional performance for your application that was constrained to the performance limits, number of hard drives, inside of your server.

If you are a Server/Network/Systems Administrator and you have limited or no SAN experience, be not afraid. EqualLogic is an easy to use, highly scalable, with all inclusive software and management, SAN solution that will relieve your server capacity and performance problems.
